This week we collected the data from the dispensers that we put in Westchester Lutheran School. We took the dispensers back to Windward so that we could measure how much sunscreen the kids used in the 3 day period we gave it to them. After we measured how much the kids used we continued preparing for the forum and making a presentation to show there.
This week was the forum. We had prepared amazingly and had five interactive elements to make people interested in our project. We brought our dispensers in and we had them filled so that people could use the sunscreen and get a deeper understanding about our project. We also had a slideshow, PowerPoint, our blog, and a survey. We split up what we were talking about so that everyone contributed something new to our presentation. This week our group had a few problems that we had to overcome. We met with Jacqueline, the Assistant Director of Operations at Windward, who told us if we had permission to put the dispensers around campus. Sadly, she said that we could not due to health hazards that the sunscreen might cause. We had to brainstorm how to change our project because we could no longer put the dispensers around Windward campus. Finally, we came up with the idea to email Veronica’s old school, Westchester Lutheran School, and ask to put dispensers in a few classes. Luckily, they said that we could put two dispensers in classrooms and give a short presentation to the kids about the dispensers, how to use them, and why we they are so important.
This week our group made a lot of progress. We found a sunscreen dispenser that we really liked. So far we have ordered three sunscreen dispensers that we have agreed is our favorite. We have not yet found a sunscreen that we will fill the dispensers with but we have found a few different opinions to look at. Another thing that we did this week is email a dermatologist to meet with. Since we would like to gain further information about skin cancer we have written a series of questions to Ms. Jan, a dermatologist who agreed to answer our questions. We wrote down questions and she emailed us her answers. This interview was very helpful for our group because we learned more about the different causes of skin cancer and how important sunscreen is. One other thing that we did this week is we set up a meeting with Jacqueline, the Assistant Director of Operations at Windward, so that we will be able to set up our dispensers.
